Where Excellence
Takes the Stage

The Vanguard International Piano Competition was founded to celebrate pianists of all levels and backgrounds, providing a stage where preparation meets artistry and technique meets passion.

Competitors will be evaluated on technical proficiency, musicality, interpretation, and stage presence by a distinguished panel of three expert judges. Whether you are a rising student or a seasoned performer, this competition offers a meaningful platform for growth.

All performances are open to the public, making this a true community celebration of the piano.

All participants receive a certificate of participation. Prizes are distributed following the final adjudication.

Rules & Regulations

Eligibility

The competition is open to pianists of all ages and skill levels. Participants must register before the stated deadline and submit a complete application including repertoire selection.

Repertoire

Competitors may perform any solo piano piece of their choosing. Music may be from any period or style. All repertoire must be performed from memory. Arrangements are permitted.

Performance Time

Each competitor is allotted a maximum of 8 minutes of performance time. Exceeding the time limit may result in score deductions at the judges' discretion.

Scoring Criteria

Performances are scored on four equally weighted criteria: Technical Proficiency, Musicality & Expression, Interpretation, and Stage Presence. Each judge scores independently.

Adjudication

Three judges will score each performance independently. Final scores are determined by averaging all three judges' scores. Judges' decisions are final and not subject to appeal.

Conduct

All participants and audience members are expected to maintain a respectful, professional atmosphere. Disruptive behavior may result in disqualification. Applause is reserved until each performance concludes.

Instrument

A grand piano will be provided. No personal instruments may be brought onto the stage. Competitors may request a brief warm-up period prior to the event. No electronic instruments or accompaniment are permitted.

Recording Policy

Competitors grant the competition organizers the right to photograph and video record performances for promotional purposes. Personal recording by audience members is not permitted during performances.

Dr. Eleanor Hartwell

Concert Pianist & Professor

A graduate of the Royal Conservatory, Dr. Hartwell has performed in over 30 countries and held faculty positions at leading music conservatories for over 20 years. Her specialty is Romantic-era interpretation and pedagogical technique.

Prof. Yuki Tanaka

Pedagogue & Recitalist

Prof. Tanaka has spent three decades nurturing young pianists and has adjudicated competitions across North America and Asia. Her approach emphasizes the balance between technical rigor and authentic musical storytelling.
